Trimming Donkeys: Trimming Protocol, Hoof Distortion, and Laminitis – Part 2

Donkeys are a little different than horses when it comes to working on their hooves. In this two-part webinar series, Ross Keller will discuss trimming protocols, hoof distortion and evaluation, laminitis and hoof care strategies for laminitis, and multiple case studies.

Part 1 – Donkey Trimming Protocol Refinements & Hoof Distortion Evaluation

Trimming topics include the following:
Sole plane and frog plane identification
Sole depth assessment
The importance of asking questions (i.e. does the presentation and all data make sense together?)
Adapting your approach for atypical presentations

Distortion and evaluation topics include the following:
Defining distortion
How distortion is expressed in donkey hooves
Why understanding and evaluating distortion is important
Explanation of a distortion grading system

Part 2 – Donkey Laminitis and Case Studies

Laminitis topics include the following:
Cumulative damage
ACTH and insulin testing
Short-term hoof care applications
Long-term hoof care strategies

Case Studies include the following:
Managing suspensory degeneration
Long-term chronic laminitis
A donkey with a non functional, non-weight bearing limb
A donkey with an extreme angular limb deformity

Ross Keller is a full time farrier and hoof care educator. Passionate about longears and recognizing a critical need for compassionate handling, Ross chose to specialize in donkey and mule hoof care, built upon his decades of donkey training experience. He is certified by the Equine Lameness Prevention Organization (E.L.P.O.) and is an instructor at that organization’s clinics and farrier school. Ross has developed hoof trimming protocols and procedures specific to the donkey and regularly provides corrective and rehabilitative hoof care. In addition to teaching the technical aspects of donkey hoof care, Ross also places significant emphasis on teaching about donkey behavior, behavior modification (gentling), and appropriate handling techniques.
