PHCP Practitioner Spotlight – Cristina Brogdon
Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started in hoof care
I own a trail riding business with 15 of my own horses, so it seemed like it would be more cost effective if I could trim them myself. I also had a mare, Cricket, with canker—that tossed me into the deep end of learning. My trimmer at the time encouraged me to take hoof care classes, and I was certified through that program in 2016. I trimmed a handful of other horses until covid hit and didn’t know what was going to happen with trail rides. I picked up a bunch of clients around that time so my horses could continue living their best lives but still wasn’t super confident trimming.
I started the PHCP program and mentorships the following year. The initial mentorship was the extra boost needed to feel more confident trimming and to start filling my books. That first mentorship with Paige Poss also kick started my love for exploring cadaver legs and other equine body parts. She is not only a great teacher but an awesome human, and I make a point to do at least one of her clinics per year to absorb more knowledge. The other two PHCP mentors I rode with also had valuable tips and tricks. I am also super grateful to the three mentors who helped me through my advanced mentorships.
What is your favorite thing about being part of PHCP
The hoof nerd community! I also love that with the PHCP program mentorships are required. I have learned more out of doing mentorships than I did through the other initial certification program. I had the privilege outside of the mentorships to ride with several local trimmers, and have learned so much from watching and asking questions. I want to work toward becoming an official PHCP mentor and to offer mentorships to practitioners working through the PHCP program.
