PHCP Mentor Spotlight – Alicia Harlov
PHCP practitioner and mentor Alicia Harlov’s hoof care journey has led her to all four corners of the country and many places in between, as well as international travel to learn more about hooves and soundness.
Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started in hoof care
In 2014, I was a public school music teacher who simply enjoyed riding. I bought my dream horse, a good sized mustang with trail experience and a good brain. Only a few months after buying him, he came up lame after a trail ride. When it didn’t resolve, a vet exam diagnosed navicular, cysts and enthesiophytes on the navicular bone, and later an MRI revealed DDFT tears and collateral ligament adhesions. I was devastated but too stubborn to give up. Through Google searches I found Rockley Farm navicular rehab and visited their property in 2015. I got the hoof care “bug” and embarked on a journey of learning about diet, biomechanics, trim styles and hoof comfort, anatomy, and so much more.
What is your favorite thing about being part of PHCP
I absolutely love the community that PHCP has fostered. Everyone in the organization is incredibly supportive and encouraging, and wants to help others learn and grow and even just brainstorm about cases or be a friend when needed. I’ve learned so much from this organization and love how inclusive they are of various approaches, and they are always looking to better themselves for the sake of the horse.
What are your interests besides all things hooves
I enjoy trail riding, exploring (I would rather walk than drive most places, I love visiting other cities and being “touristy”, adventuring!), hosting friends at our farm and having BBQs or campfires, and just being outside.
